Late Serial Numbers
I recently saw 2 late manufacture carbines in a collection. One was a
Winchester M1
ser # 7268xxx and the other was an Inland hand stamp M1
7392xxx. How near to end of each manufacturer's actual production not the allotted serials are these guns? Thanks.

I know who has Winchester 72778XX. I was told by several serious collectors that is was one of the last M-1's made in the last of July or very early August 1945. Everything afterwards was shifted into M-2 production. I am not familiar with the M-2 production numbers so I can not comment on that. I was also told that there a one or two higher serials out there, but I do not know who has them.
That 7.26 Win is a very late one as well. Someone with the Carbine Club will have much more accurate information.
Hope that helps.

I would be very careful about the the 7.39 million Inland. Make sure it is not a handstamped M2 that has been altered to now be marked M1
.

rpw7351, Mike has a good point. Check out the May '10 Carbine Club news letter. First page article deals with the Inland M1
/M2 serial numbers.....Frank

I have seen this serial number as the highest, on a reliable list.
