I'm having trouble with the net tonight. I can't get your pictures to pop up. I'll check back within a couple days.

Info on Holes
Hi PAVarminter!
It was a very good idea to post some pics of your Swedish
Mauser. Looking at the pics I have some info on the holes in the back of the receiver. The holes in the back of your Swedish Mauser were drilled to mount a diopter sight. I have a Swedish Mauser with the same drillings; I am pretty certain that the diopter which was once mounted was a so-called 'Söderin'. The Swedish had many different diopters mounted on the m/96 rifles. They were used for longe range target shooting within the military and the home guards. If you are interested in this topic, there are some good books on Swedish Mauser diopters and accessories. Once a while you get some reasonbable Söderin diopters at ebay. Nevertheless, I recommend that you get a Swedish Mauser front sight hood for your rifle. I have one too and it is very nice especially for target shooting. If you have further questions, feel free to drop me a message.
Greetings from the other side of the big moist
Tom :-)

Dutchman, I'm looking forward to your input. I appreciate information from someone who knows their stuff. I am now concerned that the stock does not go with the rifle as original and so the disc on the stock is meaningless as far as barrel quality and point of impact. I can assure you the barrel is in excellent shape, by any definition. Smooth as glass and the rifling is crisp.
Thanks Gunner and Thommygun for the input and links. I intend to purchase a hood and diopter sight most likely later this summer before archery season consumes my time.
If anyone is interested I will continue to update this thread. Thank you all again for the support, and for your useful information.

I haven't had the rifle actually in my hands, so I can't say anything about the wood.
What I CAN say is that our currencies are pretty close to matching right now and that I know guys who would LINE UP for a chance to buy that rifle.
VERY pretty!
With only a TINY bit of luck, it will shoot as good as it looks. 6.5x55 is not a difficult cartridge to handload and your home-rolled ammo will be cheaper than factory AND more accurate.
Have fun!

Your 96 Mauser
I noticed that your rifle has the muzzle of the barrel threaded. This was done after 1955, for a Blank Firing Attachment. The Swedes used a wooden bullet in their blanks, and were not supposed to point the rifle at anyone under 100 Meters, but accidents did occur. The Blank Firing Attachment threaded onto the barrel, and shredded the wooden bullet upon firing.
Also, there were eleven different rear target sights used on these rifles. You have a 1 in 11 chance of getting the right one if you buy one on E-Bay, so you might consider using your rifle with the open sights. It is possible that your rifle was once a Home Guard or FSR rifle, as these people were allowed to slightly modify their rifles, as long as it did not "harm" the rifle. An approved FSR gunsmith was allowed to put target sights on these rifles.

PAVarminter,
you´re welcome and please keep us updated! The archery season over here has started and for our laws is bowhunting in the real game not allowed. I was yesterday at an 3D course with over 50 targets . It was great!
