Underwood Bavarian Carbine
This is a Bavarian Police/Forestry Underwood M1
Carbine that appears to have come into the country as a barreled receiver. It used to have a cruddy M2 stock, an Inland trigger housing (Type V) with mixed parts (unmarked hammer, Inland trigger and mag release, unmarked push safety, and Underwood sear), and a Type III IBM operating slide. The barreled receiver is blued. The bolt is blued, flat, and with all correct Underwood parts. The barreled receiver still has the original Type I barrel band, flip sight, and front sight. Barrel date is 12-43. The receiver has the Ordnance Bomb stamped on the beveled end behind the serial number

The second picture shows the receiver, the Bavarian mark on the left side of the front sight, and the milled area on the left side of the receiver next to the bolt where the Bavarian Police/Forestry stamping was removed.

The third picture shows the flip sight (with the S on the base and .U. on the flip), the barrel band, and the front sight (.U. on the front).

I’ve put the barreled receiver into a correct Underwood stock with correct handguard, correct trigger housing assembly, and correct slide. The only part I’m missing is a correct Type IIA mag release (it has a Type IIA but Inland marked). Not sure what else I might do with it. I’ve seen a lot of carbines for sale over the past year, but only a couple with original flip sights and Type I barrel bands. This one was inexpensive and it’s been fun learning about its pedigree.

I wonder who removed the Bavarian Police/Forestry stamping ?
Possible that the Importer did ?
The Frt sight is interesting with the Bavarian marking.
No books handy........... But was 2,8 a Sub Receiver? I see no markings B, T, W,or S.
I have a 2,4 W, that you can barely see the W. You'd miss it if you weren't looking hard for it.
Great looking project. Thanks for sharing it.
Would love to see a picture of it with some wood on it.
Congrats,

I think that War Baby indicated it could be a Sub-contract receiver, but there is no mark visible inside the Ordnance Bomb. I don't know if anyone has any information on who removed the original Bavarian Police/Forestry marking, but it isn't unusual to find them this way. I'll post a picture of the carbine in the Underwood stock later; the stock has a nice cartouche and looks good except for a crack in front of the barrel band.

Don't start me talking about them today, the girlfriend will go loopy, will think she's being ignored. Here's my Forestry, the one above is an IBM with the German
agency name removed. I've had them for about ten years. The expert on these is Jim Mock, California, but he's away at the mo doing a couple of Gun Shows, if you can wait till he gets back he will be able to tell you all about your one. Mike. Attachment 14821

Underwood in full stock
Here are pictures of the Underwood Carbine in an Underwood stock; low wood, oval oiler cut. I've also included a picture of the cartouche. There are no rebuild marks, a P-U in the slingwell, and a M-U stamp on the handguard.

Yes, there were different UEF cartouches. The large box was used on the type 1 and some early type 2 stocks.

I bought the stock from a carbine collector that I trust, and another carbine collector looked at the cartouche and said it was correct. That being said, I'm always open to other opinions.
