Too cold and wet to go down to the shed and open up the safe. Still haven't had the new rifle out of it since I brought it home.... boredom has the mind wandering... hmmm

I've often thought of starting a discussion about the myths that abound on the topic of milsurp rifles...
After reading some of these you can see how mixed up newcomers to the world of collecting can become. Stumbled across this gem- anyone want to comment?

Anybody heard any "good ones" lately? Add them here for a laugh.

Cock the bolt and dry fire the rifle. There should be no play back and fourth if you push and pull the bolt. The bolt may fly up just a little,that is normal.Close the bolt and do the test.
If you can get a new empty casing,or one you know has been sized in a rifle with good head spacing, place a single layer of common masking tape on the base of the case. Close the bolt on the chambered case slowly. You should feel a slight resistance at around 2 o'clock as you close the bolt. If not, the rifle will most likely have excessive head spacing. This condition is very common. While the rifle will be safe to shoot, you will have very poor case life.

Yes I saw that one as well, when thats the instruction to a newcomer for checking headspace its no wonder some folks get confused.

How about :
ZF = Zimbabwe Forces
DP = Durban Police

The Durban Police rifle reminds me... I don't know if I can find it again, but a bloke said his DP Patt14 rifle was a DP BECAUSE the barrel was drilled through the chamber- and they cut the firing pin off to stop it being fired. He replaced the barrel and firing pin so it wasn't Drill Purpose rifle anymore and declared it good to go!

Masking tape to check headspace???? If you Google masking tape you will find it comes in thicknesses varying from 3 mils to 7 mils or .003 to .007 in thickness.

Should we all agree to use the Chinese brand that is advertised at 4 mils or just agree masking tape is just so much "sticky wicket" or the "wrong pitch" for out game.

My second favorite headspace measuring device is automotive plastigage, how many crankshafts have you seen with .303 British stamped on them. Or to make this simple how would you ever get an accurate reading when the plastigage is flowing into the letters on the back of the case? (unless you filled them with masking tape)

The real problem with excess headspace is what to do with all the foam.

Being a non drinker I don't have a headspace problem associated with beer, but it does leave me lacking a decent explanation for so many other things I do....
