I wonder if it wasn't re-barreled during the refurb process because the bore is in such great shape. It's as sharp and clean as the NRF SMLE you sold me back in the fall. Then again, it's a late war rifle that may not have even been fired outside the factory.
Maybe not as collectible as some of the other models out there, but it was destined for 8x63 conversion before I got to it so at least it has been saved.

8x63 conversion is worthwhile, but I'd be hesitant to do it to a nice east german refurb - use a crappy RC with a decent bore instead! I did mine on a commercial husqvarna 98.
Hard to see in the pics, but I think your barrel is a replacement. Originals would have markings near the receiver. Not unusual since most of the mk-2 marked easter germans I have seen are sporting new bbls.

I wouldn't dream of doing a 8x63 conversion, the guy I bought it from was going to do the conversion but opted out of it because of the lack of ammo and stout recoil. This K98
was thus surplus to his needs. The barrel has an "E" on the left but that's it.
My google research tells me it's got a lot of 'Kriegsmodell' parts. The receiver serial number is quite high 888** "a" underneath, the bolt is a Kriegsmodell version with uniform 'cooling holes', but the floor plate retains the lock screws and as the pics show it has a cleaning rod, site hood, and bayonet lug.

It's typical to have a mix or early and late-war parts on EG refurbs. The receiver may not be nazi issue. Some EG's are built on leftover receivers. An 80,000a range serial number would be high for a gun that saw ww2 issue IMHO.

I always thought the EG refurbs were done carefully with mostly matching rifles. In any event, it's in very good shape and will probably make a good shooter which was exactly what I was looking for.
Was one of those CGN transactions that didn't even make it to the EE boards.
