Frank,
Did you repark those yourself?

Frank, it is so nice of you to repark those before you mail them to me.....
Seriously, nice job! How much prep did you have to do and how long did it take from start to finish?

Hi Ed and Rusty, prep time about half hour. I stripped them with rust and blue stripper from Birchwood Casey. Then a little steel wool. I got my park solution from speedycool off E-Bay. Degrease and into the park solution about 20 minutes, (or one cold one) rinse, dry, and oil. The Undewood needed some body work it was really beat up. But all in all about an hour. I also did a type three band and a Win. slide at the same time. The slide took longer. about 40 min. Fun project.....Frank

I think one thing stoping me from trying it is the disposal of the solution - plus I don't want to mess up any 65 year old parts! Guess I am going to have to try it sooner or later.
Wish I would have known you were going to do a Win slide, I would have just swapped you. I already have a reparked slide that I want to trade out with an original finished slide.

Now I know who to call on for little touch up jobs.

Ed, the Win. slide had no finish left. That's why I reparked it. If you are going to try it you can start with something besides those valuable carbine parts. Small parts don't need a lot of solution. I had about a half gallon left. Next up for me is a shot out barrel to try, then a receiver. If you try it good luck.....Frank
Rusty, be glad to help out.....Frank

Frank,
Have you ever tried the Radocy Zinc Phosphate Parkerizing?
I use it and was buying it from them by going to their site... Radocy Takedown Guides - Detailed disassembly instructions and practical tips to clean your firearm but don't see it listed now. I have their brochure here some where.
A member from the old Forum 'Quagmire' passed along instructions to me on using it 5 or 6 years ago now.
I've had very good luck with it, as it's very forgiving. If your in need of that medium gray look.
Found that thinner/softer parts like Buttplates, Recoilplates.. etc take 1/2 the time to park as harder parts.
JP (Quagmire) was kind enough to send me a step by step instruction sheet he uses from his personal experiences.
I've tweeked this just a little bit. Noticed when I use the Muratic Acid, I tend to get a darker gray..slightly black finish like on a IBM even with the same bath time and strength solution. Rust gets fine media blasted.
As you know........ De-Greasing is the key. I use 4/000 steel wool to WET buff down the fresh park right after pulling it from the tank. Then blow dry... Dip in a 2 cycle oil mix overnight.... then coat with axle grease for a week or so.... If time allows. Just my way to skin the cat.
If anyones interested and as time allows I'd be happy to list these same tips that were passed along to me.
Fill that barrel at least halfway with water then plug it before you park it.
Cheers,

Charlie, I remember quagmire from the old forum. Have you herd from him lately? Thanks for the tips. Is it possible to get the Redocy from somewere? I would like to try it. I like the idea of the two cycle oil soak & axle grease. I'm going to do that on my next project. What do youe use for plugs? The water in the barrel tip is something I would not have thought about, thanks. As time allows I would like to get those tips. I don't think a guy can get to many. As always, thanks for your insight, much appreciated.....Frank

Haven't heard from JP in quite a while. hope he's doing ok.
I'll try to get my wife to call Radocy this week to see if they still carry it. Their phone number is 1-800-356-4759, their in Ohio.
Reason for the water in the barrel is in case it does leak a little, the park solution would be diluted. I still run a brush thru a few times after park, when I'm WET buffing with the 4/0000 steel wool to get rid of any grainy feel.I keep all freshly parked parts in a fresh water bath while buffing them down, then pull, rinse again, blow dry, then drop in the oil bath.
I bought an assortment of tapered rubber plugs from my local hardware. I use those and play with some of those rubber plugs that compress when the screw on the end is tightened. For the gas chamber I thread in a bolt with allen head and Teflon tape. All seem to work well.
I'll get that other info out this weekend.
My paperwork is done..... 4:30 is gonna come quick.
Night,
Charlie
