You are correct. It is a Lee Enfield No.1 Mk.III* that was manufactured at Birmingham Small Arms factory in 1918. It would have originally had a military full-length forend, upper and lower hand guards and a nose cap. Pretty good buy for 40 bucks! How does it shoot?

The model is an SMLE (Short, Magazine Lee Enfield) Mark III*, made by Birmingham Small Arms Company (not British
Small Arms Company). This rifle was made with a full military stock and nose cap. It was not sporterised by the factory---a subsequent civilian owner cut down the wood.
$40 is a great deal---how does it shoot?
---Sorry for the nearly identical post. I didn't see Spinecracker's reply when I did mine.

ok thanks for the info i have not had a chance to shoot it yet as i have been setting up my hunting rifel and working on a load for it but when i bought the rifel it had been sitting for some time its bore was extremly dirty and i thought that it might just be a lesson learned for the future but the bore turned out to be quite good after cleaning when i get a good chance to shoot it i will let you know again thanks for the information

The good thing is, you can buy a complete set of wood, a new barrel band and a nose cap and its back to original spec. Theres plenty of spares around.
The bad thing is, you'll be hooked on Enfields and want another, and anonther and another.......
Trust me, you will, a No4, a No5, a MkIII and so on. Its an addiction, best get your subscription to Lee Enfields anonymous in a.s.a.p.

It's a Short Magazine Lee Enfield MkIII* (aka Rifle, No.1 MkIII*) manufactured in 1918 by Birmingham Small Arms. It would've originally been in military configuration, the sporterizing was done post-service. For $40 you got a great deal.
edit...I guess I have to apologize for slow typing too...
REALLY slow typing...
