Fix solvent mark on stock
I was shooting my 03A4 today--shot great with Hornady Garand
loads and would still print well under an inch.
However, I got a little bore solvent on my stock when I was cleaning it. It acted like turpentine on the red wood, and now I have light markings where the solvent ran dow the stock.
What's the best way to fix this? Its nowhere near needing to be refinished, but I'd like to restore the original area. I suspect the stock was a Korean War replacement since it just has the SA box on the buttstock with no other markings. It is the typical deep red color.
Thanks

Cube,
first - go slow
Try rubbing in a little raw linseed oil
around the spot.
If this doesn't help take a bit of the oil and mix in a small amount of stain or wood dye. The basic tint of the stain or dye shoul be close to the red of the stock. but make the solution kind of weak.
Then apply the mix to the spot - use multiple applications until you get a match.
Let us know how you make out.

Jim

I couldn't have said that any better myself Jim !
CubeWarrior, pay attention to the first statement in Jims post. Getting in a hurry has led to more than one royal mess-up.

Gentlemen,
Thanks--I'm putting one coat a day on the stock and then letting it dry. The first and second coats fixed 90% of the problem area, and I figure another 2-3 coats will do the trick.

Glad to hear its working out for you. I had some G96 Gunscrubber run out of an action a few years ago. Took the oil finish of an A3 in a heartbeat.
