Bare Metal British MkII Bren Butt-Slide

Hi,

The Daimler / Monotype MkII I bought at Beltring in July has a matching numbered Linotype & Machinery made butt-slide. The odd thing is that it is bare metal, whereas the receiver is blued. (or whatever coating they used in early 1943)

Any ideas why it would be left bare?

It also had improvised sling swivels formed of short metal rods bent into a loop with the ends pushed in the mounting pin holes. Any idea what country may have done this?

Offhand, I'd say that the butt slide has been bead/sand blasted prior to you getting it as it'd never get into any service like that! We see SA80's that have been rubbed through by the cack-handed use of scotchbrite pads. That's it............... Someone bored silly on guard cleaning the gun with scotchbrite pads.

I don't understand about the sling swivels. A pic would be interesting.

All this talk of Bren guns is whetting my appetite peregrine......... I feel a morning on the range coming on soon..........

I think the bare metal butt slides are from a crap finish. I've seen a number like this where it dosn't look blasted, the finish has just washed off. Dont ask me how, it just does!

Yes, that's the sort of thing. The ones on mine have since been removed, although I did take some pictures beforehand. A Greek field modification?

The gun is currently in bits awaiting a full clean and reassembly when I have some time off work next month.

Its not one of Mine Peter, If it was, I would be up poo creek and definatly have no padel! The missus hates anything on her dinig room table, and funnily enough, all the damage on our table has been caused by Her Royal Highness!

The photo was posted on another site and I noticed the sling swivel and made a note of it. Besides that, if I come across any Bren photos that state or show a serial number, I save them by number.
