Early 03 Remington

I purchased SN3021131, 1-42 on the CMP auction earlier this year. This rifle was processed by John Beard for the CMP and Mr. Beard took many notes on the rifle. 21131 was among 9 New Zealand rifles turned in by the same VFW post and all had poor bores from shooting blanks for many years. Of note it has a R marked follower spring absent from earlier SN'd rifles, and it is one of the earliest documented Remington's with no lightning cut in the triggerguard. Either the small or large gas port on the bolt is correct for this SN range and this one has a large port. This rifle also has a early parked extractor with a correct R marked on the inside. Also these rifles all came with a longer sight groove cut in the handguard. 21131 sports a beautiful stock with vivid cartouches especially for a rifle that spent much of it's life in the trunk of a car en route to funerals and parades.

If you own or are looking for an early Remington, don't jump to any conclusions on small parts that have been parkerized as Mr. Beard has documented many examples of parts that are genuine and correct to the year. I would say this is especially true from January, 1942 and later. Regards, Rick.

Lightening cut in the triggerguard?

Hello Mike. Yep.....here is what they look like. Only the real early ones had the lightning cut as this one of those cost saving measures to speed up production. Note the one on the left is not cut out and the earlier one from SN 3004295 has the cutout.

For many years I have been totally ignorant about these rifles but thanks to John Beard, I am beginning to see the light as this man has actually touched and inspected more of these rifles than anyone on the planet. Not only that, he shares his vast knowledge with the rest of the world freely for which I am eternally grateful........thanks John! Regards, Rick.
