Krag Unit Markings
I have a very nice 1898, ser. # 1368XX. Looking for any info on the unit numbers on the stock. There is a large 9 stacked over a 1, and underneath that is a smaller 47. Was there any consistency as to how these markings were used/applied? Finally, given the serial number, might this rifle have seen any combat? Thanks for any information.

Most regular army units did not stamp their weapons during the Krag
era. Stampings could be from national Guard, state police, VFW, whatever... The SN on your rifle indicates it was made after the end of the Spanish American War, but it could have see service in China or the Philippines, or maybe Mexico.
there are guys on the Culver
list who can give you more info - perhaps.

Thanks for the info. Posting the obligatory pictures is on my to-do (honey-do?) list!
