No.5 MK1...on the fence

On the fence with a local Enfield (well, as to purchasing it, not really out at the fence, that'd probably **** the neighbors off a little). No.5 MK1 marked England icon

, 1945 on the wrist and BNP (British National Property?) on the receiver ring. $399 at a local big box store with a used gun rack. No obvious import marks (which seem to only bother the Garand icon

and Carbine collectors anyway). I didn't spend all that much time with it, since I was only browsing for the hell of it and not really looking for another rifle right now...but it's worked into my head. Good price? Seems lower than GB, but I don't really trust ANYTHING about Gunbroker anymore. If I go back and look at it again is there something that would be a make/break factor that I should look for?

BNP stands for Birmingham Nitro Proof. Look to see it has the correct rear sight, should only go up to 800 yards, if memory serves. That price is lower than most you will see on GunBroker, not bad really for being in a local store. If she's speaking to you then grab it up and have some fun.

Do some research to make sure you know what to look for. A lot of "No.5's" are actually modified No.4's. Real No.5's had several weight-reduction features that No.4's don't have. A hole in the bolt, flutes milled into the barrel, something was milled off the r. side of the receiver (can't remember what it's called right now). There's other details, but someone more knowledgable will have to chime in.

The left side of the receiver will also have a notch below the rear sight while a No 4 does not.

A BSA would have a slight premium in my world over a FAZ. Fewer of them. Seems a tad high without know more, but then again I'm cheap.
It should have No. 5 Mk 1 on the left receiver wall, either pantographed or electric pencil, Faz or BSA, respectively. Get them to toss in a box of shells and go for it.

I would make sure the serial nunber on the bolt matches the receiver. If it didn't, I would probably pass on it at that price.
