Hi,
Thanks for the reply, no I don't collect scopes so don't know anything about it just picked it up because I liked it, is the case for a different make/model of scope or the same type of scope but didn't originate with this one ? Do you know if these scopes are rare ? Presumably the Periscopic Prism ones are the most common ? Thanks again for the help

Here's a comparable scope for sale on an Australian
ebayesque auction site, no bids, he dropped the price after nobody bought it for $2000AUD.

Nice find. The case is the correct type and the rifle numbers on the scope and case would have matched originally. You're right, this is the most common type of WWI scope encountered. I forget how many were supplied to the WD, but someone else will remember no doubt. They were not well beloved by those who used them. Too inclined to slop in the windage adjustments, too much spherical distortion, too low power and IMO the post and crosshair are too thick. An inferior design that the WD bought out of necessity in 1915. The company was taken over by the Ministry of Munitions in 1917, probably for profiteering and general incompetence.

Can you see a model number on it anywhere?
From the lack of adjustment facility, and the graticule pattern you posted on the other forum, the scope is probably just a basic bore-sighting or collimation instrument - maybe used on a survey instrument or gunsight collimator.

Yes, unfortunately this thread started almost two years ago and it out of date. We have since switched to a new Classifieds ad system for members, so you'd need to keep an eye open there for newer ads.
I have deleted the outdated links in the original post... thanks for the heads up ..
Regards,
Doug
