Removing Rack Number

Any suggestions on how to remove a painted rack number from the stock of a CMP rifle. I don't want to refinish the stock. Also, will a thorough rubbing with BLO on cheesecloth help clean/restore the stock finish?

Any of the liquid strippers should work. All you want to do is remove three painted numbers and acetone should do that too. A real cloth and lots of acetone, just wipe the affected area and keep changing the cloth to keep the paint from streaking into the rest of the area. Providing the stock isn't too dark with crap it should do the job without changing anything else. There are many products to clean and restore the walnut finish. BLO is but one. Cheesecloth? Sure.

I have done a few of these successfully over the years without cleaning the complete stock. I carefully take the area and use stripper. I wipe it off then water wipe the area then wipe dry then acetone the area a few times. Lightly 0000 steel wool if needed then stain and oil to match back up. Hope this helps. Rick B

Its part of the history. I personally like rifles so marked.

Here is a rack marking that I would never remove, other side of the stock is marked TENNAttachment 19688Attachment 19689Attachment 19690 (it came with the white paint too)
