I have done a few of these successfully over the years without cleaning the complete stock. I carefully take the area and use stripper. I wipe it off then water wipe the area then wipe dry then acetone the area a few times. Lightly 0000 steel wool if needed then stain and oil to match back up. Hope this helps. Rick Bicon
