Danish Breda M1 reduced to parts kit

Bought an M1 parts kit at the last funshow. Was horrified to see it was a Danish Breda FKF rifle - one type I would love to own. The seller claimed it was an old kit; which I believed since it had an intact original barrel. The receiver was reduced to a sorry paper weight.

Anyone know how many of these were made?

Why are these and other Breda/Berretta M1s not being imported?

Out of Canada 10 (?) years ago. Formerly very common, usually found with nice VAR barels and now all gone. Receivers are still around in Canada.

No info on how large the Danish contract was with Breda? Guessing it was 10k or 20k. Never seen a pic of one with a sn# over 10k.

By memory_ OK? Something like 20,000 receivers were for sale in Canada. LONG story. Not sure if all or part were Breda/PB Garands. Century Int'l parted them out and had the spare receivers for sale. I want to say less then $40.00 each. Sold to someone who tried to smuggle them into the USA. He went to Federal prison for it. Again, LONG story.

Never seen a pic of one with a sn# over 10k.

I have 10085 -- Pic of it will be used in an article on the Danish GV/50 Garands in the Spring 2012 GCA Journal.

Yes the tales that are told around the rifle range's burning trash barrels.

When Denmark surplused its war reserve Garands, circa 1995, the US border was closed. Smart guys calculated the capacity of the Canadian market at $150 ea and saw a way to recover some of their investment by selling Garand parts into the US. The USGI receivers had to stay in Canada, but the wood and metal bits went south. Now Garands are over a grand in Canada, with noteworthy examples 10x the retail price.

In 2000, the antis in Canada got wind of an EXPORT paperwork problem (not a gun control problem) and turned it into a major public safety story. There was no illegality in Canada, and the parts etc were returned to their owners. The Americans however had some explaining to do ....

Interesting. I bought my first Garand in '92, right after I got out of school. For years I assumed it was a Korean return, WELL used in a beech stock. 15 years later (and 8 CMP Garands) I took it apart to turn into a Numrich 308 Tanker, and it had an anchor on the sight cover spring. Near as I can tell, it was Danish surplus, also had a BMB bolt.

Chopped up receivers make my stomach hurt.

hi shot in the dark but I need a barrel for a bren garand reciever I just bought, im planning attampting a rebuild from parts got anything else that might help me get on my way?
