Peter and jmoore are right, it is beyond all reasonable doubt a BSA. Compared it side by side stripped down to a friends 1944 M 47 C BSA today and it is marked the same and has matching reciever details/ contours. The only Britishicon markings removed by the Indians were the M 47 ?, date and s/n on the butt socket, the rest were left intact.
