I shoot modern Colt 1851s in .36 and replica Rem 1858s in .36 and .44, and all are very nice shooters and accurate. Where I live it gets pretty hot in summer and most lubes or crisco over ball melts into a mess. I learned to just use Wonder Wads over powder, then ball over wad, and a powder charge so that the ball ends up seated just under cylinder face as stated. Get a flask and a good set of brass chargers for the flask to give you different powder charge options. The 1858s will typically take a little more powder than the Colts in same caliber. If the ball does not go beneath the cylinder face, there will be trouble indexing the cylinder. I use Goex Black 3F and Pyrodex P. Watch out for the new substitutes, while there may be some that work, I have experienced problems with several in years past and stay away from them. I use Remington caps, #11s work on some nipples, and #10s work on others. I had to get a set of better quality replacement nipples on one or two of the replica revolvers as I recall, have to ensure the thread pattern is correct for the model of revolver if that becomes necessary.
