Dot 1944-wartmie or post war?
I have a Dot 1944 that has two sets of serial numbers. There is a four digit italicized font number on the barrel with a lower case al under it. The receiver has the same number in Roman style numbers with upper case AI and is marked Mod. 98. Bolt is a mismatched late war style with round vent holes, but does have the guide rail on the body. The stock is marked dot on top of the handguard and on the bottom of the buttstock. It has the four digit serial inside the barrel channel. It has a bayonet mount and takedown disc. Faint eagle H on right side of stock. Lower band is stamped and welded style with four digit serial. Front band is speed milled also with the four digit serial. Stamped trigger guard and floorplate with capture screws.
The rifle appears to have been "de-nazified" after the war as all waffenampts have been peened or chiseled. No rampant lion proof marks can be found.
Did the Czechs assemble these after the war from misc. nazi era parts left over? Or is this a wartime rifle re-furbished and re-issued to some other country after the war?
The gun is import marked 98k Germany, CAI St. Alb. VT. Anybody know about these?

The proof marks tell the story. Most likely a real 1944 rifle, saw service somewhere after 1945(Hungary?). Sounds like a keeper.

The 44 dot code has a few variations because of manufacturing and serial number systems. Furniture should be laminate and internally numbered, the handguard and spine are still marked "dot", and the small parts stamped and numbered. The extractor and bolt release springs will be red-brown instead of blue and around mid year the holes in the bolt were changed to round. About the same time the bayo lug and the cleaning rod hole were eliminated. The "63 waffenampt is still in use also. The butt plate is usually marked "brg", the trigger guard and floor plate with "gnw", and the follower "lxr", these are subcontractor codes. Your rifle uses the third variation of serial numbering and it's unique to the 44 dot and that is the double serial number system. The known serial number range for the third variation is 871ab to 7333aw. Around 220,000 were built. Calif-Steve is correct, it's an R/C that was issued during wartime.

Thank you all for the responses! This rifle was missing capture screws, cleaning rod and front sight hood typical of RC Mausers, but was never electro-pencilled,reblued, varnished, no X on receiver or serial numbered on left side of buttstock. If they could only tell us their story! After more research, I think the second serial number on the receiver may have been applied by the importer to meet BATF rules.
