cmp service grade vs special grade

should i get a CMP service grade m1 garand or a special grade i would like a rifle with a good bore and a good one to shoot i think i want the special grade but im not sure

If you want to shoot the Games matches I'd get the special, because of the new barrel and stock(a majority of the accuracy of a Garand is due to proper stock fit, ie tight in the right places and clear in the proper spots. If you want something with history, get the Service Grade which is luck of the draw.

Lots to take into account. The specials are basically new rifles and shoot super with that new crit BBL. The flip side of the coin is $400 difference in price with many if not most of the SG measuring darn near new condition these days. The SG will grow in value the special not so much. If you could make it to one of the CMP stores and hand pick a SG that would be the way to go and spend the extra $$$ on ammo. Another consideration is some of those new CMP walnut stocks need alot of fitting to make them accurate. I bought one last fall that had to have alot of wood removed around the OP Rod etc before it would shoot well. Like I say..lots to take into account. Can't go far wrong either way..I know that just muddied the water a bit more but i think you will enjoy either..

If you are hoping for something that has any collector value service grade is the only option. If you want a "new" looking garand that will be a real competitor on the line the special grade can't be beat. I purchased a special grade for a club raffle two years ago. One I picked out at camp perry and I have to tell you it was darn fine looking rifle and shot better than the owner.

The Service Grade is a piece of history that will grow in value.
The Special Grade is a new rifle built on an historic receiver and will not gain value as a piece of history.
Do you want an historic milsurp or a fine shooter?
You really can't go wrong, either way.

Just to make things a bit more interesting there is also the Service Grade Special. A correct grade, basically new metaled rifle, with a new CMP stock. Not as expensive as an all out Special but great value.

If you could make the drive to Anniston,don't pass up going through the field grades! There might be a gem hiding in there! I may have made my best pick ever at Perry in mid Jan.A 58. mil. SA. with a IHC. saftey,{maybe correct},SA. 12 follower,and a new front sight. Every thing else was correct and matching finish! Came wrapped in a beautiful unsanded 3/8 DAS. stamped HRA stock with no rebuild stamps.Barrel gauged under 2 and shines like a new nickel.It would be to your best interest to pick your own rifle if there is any way possible! You won't regret the trip. Good luck!

My CMP Service grade HRA has a muzzle reading of 1 and throat erosion 1+. Shoots like a dream come true.

Don't discount the service grades as not being shooters - they have plenty of life left in them!
