Is it common that a mag won't fit in the gun without the bolt being open?

Do you mean loaded? One too many rounds and a weak mag spring will do that. Or an empty mag?

Yes, it was a loaded mag. It is a fairly old mag too.

Just count carefuly when loading, I'll bet you put in one to many. Otherwise, I can't imagine why it wouldn't fit.

Gotta ask--why would an additional round in a magazine keep it from seating properly? The top round in the magazine should be in the same place in relation to the feed lips whether it is round #1 or round #15 in the mag. With an additional round jammed in the mag, I could imagine some failure to feed issues, if the round is pushed in so far that it is jamming the others up.

As an aside, I have tried to load a 16th round in a magazine and never been able to.

I am just curious--given a couple of replies it seems like this might be a somewhat common thing, but I have never been able to do it............

Some mags with older springs will take an extra round. I've done it. Then there's no compression room for the ammo and follower. It's solid. Then if the bolt's closed the rounds can't move down, and there's no where for the expansion to go so the mag won't seat.

We experienced this with the Canadian C7 mags from Dimaco in the first issue in about '85 or '86. They were plastic and had too long a projection on the bottom of the follower. They would barely take 30 rds, and then were a solid chunk. Our drill is to load with the bolt forward and the mags wouldn't go. If you hammered them in, the mag lip would break off. Problem solved, unserviceable mag. To fix this shortcoming, we purchased US issue mags at source and no more problems (with that).

Got it-thank you. Hadn't even thought about the slight compression of the spring when you insert the magazine and the bolt pushes down a bit on the rounds--makes sense now.
