SA 9-42 star gauge barrel

I recently examined an M1903 with an SA 9-42 barrel on it. The barrel had the usual SA-42 "flat crown" and seemed to be a star gauge, but the star was different than I've seen on earlier star gauge barrels..this star looked like a regular star..like on a US flag. Was wondering if that is a legitimate "star gauge".

As JB said on anothert forum, that is not a true "star" gauge mark. It is either a poorly-executed fake or has some other unknown purpose. A true Star Gauge barrel would have a registration number on the top of the barrel on the receiver end.

There were no true SG barrels made after @1940-41, I believe.

The barrel has three numbers on it..D28177, D35498, and 7107A. Each number/letter sequence running in a single line running parallel with bore about 2" from rear sight.

The barrel is not a standard service rifle barrel. Springfield released a quantity of 1942-dated barrels in-the-white with no sight bases installed. The purpose for the barrels has not been found. They show up occasionally. Your description indicates that Bubba acquired one of these barrels, installed sight bases on it, enhanced the muzzle crown, fitted it to a rifle, and is now trolling for a sucker.

star gage wasnt used after 1939...so any barrel made after that with any sort of wanna be star gage...would be a fake.

Well...I didn't see the death certificate, but I think this was a legit estate sale

Yeah, gun also had a style B stock that some maroon had put grasping grooves on...pity.
