thoughts on this modified m2 housing
so i have a qhmc type 3 TH that has been modified for m2 use. now what i dont know is if it was modified by an armoury during the rebuild period (49-50) or if it was user modified. obviously the TH was re-parked after the mods were made. does the re-parking color match known modified TH from armouries? is there any documentation (possible in a CC newletter) pertaining to how the modifications were done. would modified TH have an arsenal stamp on them? so many questions....hopefully you guys can help clear this up. to help i included a bunch of pictures!
also check out the hole where the hammer plunger goes. is it me or is it off center?

Commercially modified years ago. The cuts do not match the modification requirements and check to see if the housing pin hole is beveled.

Bill-
I included pics of the housing pin hole. Are these modification requirements publicly available (possibly in a CC newsletter?) so we would be able to tell if the mods have been done correctly by an armoury? Also when you say commercially modded years ago, how did you know it was done years ago (and not current)? Is it from the overall shape of the metal or have you seen this type of commercial mod before?
PS. this TH came of a commercial Plainfield carbine.
Many thanks!

I say years ago because it does not pay to do it today. Before 1986 one could take a $25 M1
Housing and modify it and get a lot more. Today with nobody legally making M2 Carbines and many, many thousands which came in from Korea in 1996, modified M2's have a lot less value than the M1's.
All military modification have two cuts. One to retain the spring, as yours does, and the other is a lighter cut to insert the spring so it does not get bent. 99% of the dealers did not know the requirements, or did not care.
Military modification beveled the hole.

I disagree with the TH pin hole being beveled. Factory made M2 housings differ in four ways from a standard M1
housing. In addition to the removal of the right side of the rear wall and the two cuts for the selector spring, factory made M2 housings have additional milling under the sear area and a beveled TH pin hole on the right side. Modified M1 housings never have the additional milling under the sear and very, very rarely will they have the right TH pin hole beveled. The MWO may have called for the hole to be beveled but the vast majority of modified housings won't have the bevel.

Actually that is now relevant because of the amount that came in from Korea. Back before 1996 I could easily tell the military modified from the dealer modified. The military had the TH pin hole beveled and both spring cuts. The dealers usually had one spring cut, but some had both cuts, but no TH pin bevel.
After 1996 when close to 65,000 M2 housings came in from Korea, there were many poorly modified housings. The Koreans even modified the thin IBM and Std Products housings, which do not have enough steel to maintain the selector spring. It would have been a disaster to actually try to use one.
With what is one today's market, anything is possible.
