    I need help

I thought i had the high-low wood deal figured out. Is it a set amount of inches from the recoil plate to where the wood starts to rise ? Is that a way to tell ? Did anyone make a low wood with the I shaped oiler ?

No, the "I" cut oiler slot was a high wood configuration. There was a campaign to cut the excess wood from the high wood and make them all essentially low wood stocks because of the tendency to crack at the high wood mark.

The high wood has the wood at the slide opening comes back to the receiver/rear of the hand guard and the low wood has the wood stop at the same place as the notch in the hand guard.

On the left is a low wood. On the right a high wood.

Riesch's book costs about $23. With your curiosity it would be money well spent to answer basic questions.

Hi-wood stocks came with both the oval and I cut oiler slot.
I cut oiler slot is a type I
Oval cut oiler slot is a Type II.
First picture is my shooter QHMC that is a Type II oval oiler cut Hi-wood.
2nd picture is a WRA Type I, I cut oiler slot, Hi-wood stock.
3rd is a Type III WRA stock with the Low-wood right rail.
All Type II and Type III stocks will have the oval shaped oiler slot.
Like Bill stated above, many Type I and Type II stocks had the Hi-wood portion trimmed down because they tended to crack there.

If the wood on the right rail runs about 6 1/2" from the side of the recoil plate to the raised section, it's a Hi-wood stock.
If it runs about 10" to the forward raised rail section, it's a Low-wood stock.
