Does the butt plate have "fine" (20 lines/inch) or "coarse" (12 l/i) checkering? The coarse is rarer & more valuable. What are the bore & crown like? That certainly has a bearing on the value. Any pits or rust under the wood? Does the finish on the bolt match the rest of the rifle. What is the bolt heat lot code; i.e., is the bolt also from 1938? See ViShooter's excellent website regarding 1903s and John Beardicon's comprehensive database on bolt heat lot codes. http://www.vishooter.net/m1903.html

The red price tag on the counter says $1000. The CMPicon last sold 1903s with C stocks for, I believe, $575. Depending on condition and rarity, that may be high but not astronomically high.
