If my memory is correct late production 1903's made by SA had the hole added during production, not sure about the Remington's. Also there were two types of checkered butt plates, fine and coarse. The coarse one commonly associated with NM rifles had a pattern of 10 lines per inch where the other type was around 21 LPI.

Does the butt plate have "fine" (20 lines/inch) or "coarse" (12 l/i) checkering? The coarse is rarer & more valuable. What are the bore & crown like? That certainly has a bearing on the value. Any pits or rust under the wood? Does the finish on the bolt match the rest of the rifle. What is the bolt heat lot code; i.e., is the bolt also from 1938? See ViShooter's excellent website regarding 1903s and John Beardicon's comprehensive database on bolt heat lot codes. http://www.vishooter.net/m1903.html

The red price tag on the counter says $1000. The CMPicon last sold 1903s with C stocks for, I believe, $575. Depending on condition and rarity, that may be high but not astronomically high.

All of the military guns in that shop are crazy priced. Mind you it may well be a Match gun. But the shop doesn't know that. If they thought for one second it is a desirable rifle the price would be triple that price.

If I read the serial number correctly, from SRS data:

    1531478RCVR 022940DCM RIFLE SALES 1922-42

SRS data? These were receiver only sales? I don't know for sure. Either way the rifle in question does not pop up? Correct?

I dropped by the shop at lunch. The rifle is gone? Did you buy it?

The shop it was in was up here in the SF Bay Area. I'm buying it.

The gun does not have a Star-marked barrel and does not have the serial number written on the bolt.

It DOES have what appears to be the original cleaning kit still in the stock.

I'll take a bunch of high quality photos of the rifle once I get it home.

Nice A1, but not listed in SRS. Good price if bore is nice.
