    Just back from Bisley

Shot well with irons only out to 200yds, however I am having a problem with the top cover, it does seem to want to come off, is there a certain knack to this, probably me. I have a suit with a mount and wanted to mount it. The guy next to me reckoned his one just used too slide out, howvere that was 30 years ago in Germanyicon.

Surely, the L1A1 cover can only come off one way - and that's to the rear along the splines in the top of the body guiding the ribs on the cover. When you say '.....it does seem to want to come off' what exactly do you mean? I had MANY L1A1's issued to me under all conditions and I never experienced a cover wanting to come off once the body was closed up onto the TMH. I never heard of this either and they were my workaday bread and butter for many many years.

We used to zero in L1A1's with the heavy night vision attached to the covers from the Enfield rest and that was reputed to 'spring' the covers but I never saw it.

Asw for a rod guide when cleaning. Surely a cleaning rod or pullthrough guide is academic on an L1A1. If cleaned from muzzle to breech or vice verca then the flash eliminator is the guide that will prevent any contact. Or am I missing something?

Peter, sorry for being vague. I have the rifle with the normal top cover, I wanted to put the suit sight on which comes with its own top cover. On reading the book it says that the has to be removed, to remove the bolt.

    Thx

    L1A1 First shoot

Shot the new L1A1 at 400/500/600yds today. Boresighted previously at 300 and got on the target without too much trouble (except when I screwed the rearsight the wrong way, soon corrected!)

Both iron sights and SUIT were giving good results, best shooting achieved at 600, but that was later in the day when I was getting used to it.

Extraction OK but not what I'd call easy. Possibly due to the Privi .308 145g that I was using (described by one on the range as S**T ammo). Gavin suggested RUAG, which I couldn't get. I'll have to give the Remington .308 (that Mike recommended) a try.

Top cover should slide off backwards, just need to give it a good pull. Could try running a little oil into the rails first, get a pair of gloves on, give it a yank and it should come off.

They get stuck where they have been repainted. Just open the rifle, get a good finger grip on the top cover, and yank it backwards, and it will break the paint bond and slide off

Guess what I have been doing this morning? .

    Before the start:

I wonder what happens if I take out this little screw here?

And after....some will like it better before conversion, some will like it better after. Me? After, thankfully .
