Krag - 3 Holes in Receiver
I have a 1896 Krag that was left to me by my grandfather. It has 3 threaded holes on the left side of the receiver, (opposite the bolt handle) They are 1 3/16" apart. Are they for a scope mount? The gun still shoots and I would like to mount a scope on it if possible. It is NOT a collectors piece. The actions is brite metal and it has a full lenght stock, like a manlicher. Please advise.

Might be. Mine has four holes over there (2 and 2), and that's where my Dad had a scope mounted.

The 3 hole may have been for a Williams side mount. I don't think they make them anymore, but they turn up from time to time. If I remember right, it was the same as the mount for the model 81 Remington. I might even have one around here somewhere, been awhile since I've seen it though. If I find it, I'll get back to the post, only Krag I have that's been drilled and tapped has 4 holes. I think those are for Weaver mounts. You might try giving Williams a call though, maybe they still have some old stock.

Krag - Youtube
I just looked up Krag on YouTube. I saw a clip called Doc Diamond shooting a 10pt Buck with a Krag. There was a close up and his scope was mounted with a 3 hole side mount. I think I'll contact Williams. There is hope!

Yes, that was a Williams mount shown, don't think they make them anymore, but they may have some on hand. If so, their HSCO rings would put the scope over center for you., and maybe high enough that it would still eject. I wish you luck finding one, I've not seen the one I have for awhile, it's here somewhere.

I didn't find the one that's somewhere in my mess, but I did find one online for you: Williams Quick Convertible Scope Mounts - Natchez Shooters Supplies They have the high overbore rings too. That may or may not give you some problems with ejection, might have some of your cases bouncing off the scope, might wish to put a piece of tape where the case would come up to protect the scope.
I guess Williams still makes them, found this PDF of their 2011 catalog: http://www.williamsgunsight.com/guns..._Williams1.pdf Wonder why they don't have more online access to the goodies, nothing but firesight stuff. I guess they'd rather a potential customer use the phone.

Thanks to all who responeded. I happened to to find the 3 hole mount at Williams Gunsite Co. They only had 2 left. Now they have 1 left. They also have 3 or 4 Krags for sale. All told, they are one of the best, old school gun shops left around. I just wish I had more spending money. Their selection of used guns and parts is just great.
Thanks,
Ed
