The pad is missing. Is that the extra small pad? That is a modified, modified pad.

You are both correct - no pad, It never had one but it does have the drawing number. Very small number produced. I got this from the late James "Mac" McCollum many years ago

No Pad
Yes, a VERY short-lived Gas Trap part. Early rifles had a big problem with chipping hammers, MANY of the first 1500 were returned to SA for repair. The problem was fixed by adding the pad to widen the area where the hammer hit the housing and so reduce the force on it, and changing the heat treatment of the hammer. Scarce part!
