Have we ever decided what kind of Mauser this is? It is definitely a unit marking, and just if I had to guess, that's on a manlicher stock? So maybe Austrian or perhaps some other country using manlichers of thier own, Greece perhaps? Still need to know more about the host rifle though.

I agree with patrick, sometimes in the swirl of the postings you get caught up in the hunt and forget what the original ???? was, by the way what was the.... Oh I have no idea and was trying to learn from you all about mausers.
For all you members, $30(price subject to inflation) makes you a contributing member. I think this great site is worth it.

Here here! I strongly concur! I wonder if we should start a pot on what the rifle is...

Philosophizing, as is my wont, I wonder - what is the point of having limbs if you can't go out on them!
SO, going right out until I hear the branch creaking, here goes...
It is a Mannlicher Type M.95, and the marking is:
(as explained before, old-fashioned German
often used the capital J to avoid confusion with number 1)
Infanterieregiment Freiherr von Fejervary Nr. 46
12. Kompanie
Gewehr Nr. 1
They were based in Szeged, (yes, the place made famous by gulasch)
OK Wheaty, enough teasing, let's have a pic of the entire rifle!

I agree with Patrick Chadwick here; I'm feeling Mannlicher though I am not sure about the particular flavor of rifle... Being an Austrian one would link up with the German
style unit markings.
