An over simplification of what actually took place, with blame for the ammunition causing the Savage to fail. First, Colt did not manufacture the ammunition as it was supplied by Union Metallic Cartridge Co., and the 230 grain cartridge was developed in 1906 and chosen over the Model 1905 cartridge with the 200 grain bullet. Initial pistols submitted by Savage were tested by Ordnance, and problems plagued the Savage all the way through the tests and field trials. The Savage pistol had been redesigned repeatedly through out the test and trials, and the last test was on March 15, 1911 that sealed the Savage's fate as it was still plagued with problems, and the Colt/Browning design was chosen.
