Ventometers And Their Use And What For

I have before me a ventometer of which I know nothing.

The only markings are a name of -W.Gregory & Co London-

It is the one pictured in the bottom right of the picture below--borrowed from Mr wheatfields posting.


So a few questions--
a) anyone have instructions (printed)
b) anyone have instructions on how to use this ventometer from personal experience, how to mount how to use.
c) what will it fit ? A Martini or a Lee Enfield (long lee)?

Basicaly it is used to position a white pencil mark on the sight which is otherwise not adjusatable for windage. You could use it on a Snider, Martini or a Long Lee. For some reason service rifle matches at one time banned anything other than the issue non windage adjustable sight.

Thanks for that John,,,I had an idea that was the procedure but it's good to find a similar opinion.
One assumes you had to keep your pencil sharp!
I was actually looking for some way to adapt it as a sight but luckily Mr Wheatfield has been in touch and saved me from that sin!

I've looked at the pics and read John's reply, but am none the wiser as to how the ventometer is used.

Harry Mac, on the reverse of the gadget is a cut out that would fit across the mount of the sight.
The blade sticking proud of it is micro-adjustable and would lay across the actual rear sight notch.
If you were shooting to one side of your target, you would line up the blade with the centre of the v-notch, then adjust it one mark in the correct direction, then use a pencil or somesuch to mark the rear sight and use that mark as the rear sight, and so-on untill you were shooting centre.
That is as near as I understand, how it is used!

Wow! I've never before seen how to properly use the Ventometer this way for lateral adjustments. Thank you so very much guys for clearing that up for me! My God, it's amazing what I can learn from reading old posts and new ones. I've had my Ventometer around for a long time now and couldn't figure out what the blade sticking out to the side of it was used for. Thanks!
