Got my M1917 bayonet and scabbard today.

This why the bayonet comes up pretty often. Think about it, out of ammo ? Guard duty ? Prisoner guard ? Lots of times you want to move somebody along without shooting them.

Thanks for the clarification, Tom. I often wondered about that info in Jantzen's book: "They were produced in Canada by General Cutlery." So... if marked "GEN CUT," it is a US-made example, right?

Wow! I just searched on ebay for Vietnam M1917 bayonet, and the current bids are $25 and $86, with one listed as Buy Now for $275!

I used to have one of the Vietnam era built M1917 bayonets and later sold it. I wish I had known more about it; I payed $30 for it about 3 years ago and sold it not too much later for a whopping $75 and thought I was doing more. Sht_le does NOT let me forget that incident and claims he would have offered far more. Apparently they are pretty uncommon, but hey, live and learn! Right now, in place of that, my M1917 Bayonet is Remington, June of 1917 production that has been probably seen service in North Africa (at least that is my guess) because of the olive drab-tan paint that can be found chipping away but mostly covering the hilt and grip and a small section of blade. I payed $25 recently on ebay because some guy thought it way Chinese (on the reverse side of the blade are British inspectors marks that I guess if you squint looks Chinese?) Either way, it came with a nice British style scabbard and I have been pleased with her.
