Careful Harlan, they'll be accusing us of hijacking the thread...but some of those are true mechanical marvels!

Yes, I better be careful or one of those meddling moderators might get on to me and spoil my day.
That convoluted mechanical system for the rifle just reminded me of some of the things I've seen around these here parts of the world.
Sometimes design is hard to improve on, and our forefathers were mechanical geniuses in my opinion. Even though simple in appearance and function they put a lot of thought into them.
When you take into account what people like Browning and Mauser did 100 years ago and the designs are still the basis for almost everything, it makes you wonder how far we've actually come in our computer driven age.

MR. CHADWICK, You have to be the most fortunate man in BAVIARA!!! what you have here is the first prototype of PAUL MAUSER's original design for the K98
MODEL98 > congrats to you..

I just wonder if the current caliber is all that signifcant to the story behind that oddity. It looks like a swap barrel gun for testing various calibers. I know that barrels are more tightly controlled in Germay and Austria
, but it's not all that uncommon on the other side of the pond to do one rifle with multiple barrels. Benchresters particularly seem to like this feature. But that's no benchrest rifle!
