Could someone tell me the reasoning behind the cross flap canteen cover? It seems like it would be easier to get the canteen and cup out.

I think it was just to hold the canteen more securely if one ear came loose . Also , I heard that about half of them had drain holes in the bottom , which was to turn the cover into a funnel to fill the canteen from water cans with less spillage and waste. The longer flaps would make it easier to hold them out of the way but may have no bearing here . Just a WAG opinion.

I think it is colorized also but they got the mustard color pretty dang close on that Japanese
tank.
