Thought it might be something like that, but the 15 or so that share my home all are marked 2.222. The only exception is A.G. Parker s/n 0019, a converted LM-!! with a Parker 23-inch barrel and a gold front sight, marked as 2.21.
Perhaps sombody was thinking about 7.62s when they stamped this one.

I don't think its actually a UK
proof mark, but some other country's (South Africa?) version of a CIP mark. I have a feeling that its related to the CIP measurement of the cartridge pressure (ie not chamber dimension) which, IIRC, is specified at a point on (for rimless) or near the case shoulder.
Then again I might be completely wrong!
