New Guy with a US Model of 1917 Remington
Hi Guys, just checking in. I was given the barrel and reciever below by a friend who found it while cleaning out an old house. I've identified the markings on it through this site and others and would like to restore it to a shooter. I'd really like to hunt with it. The rear sight tangs are not shaved off and I don't plan on doing it, so I'll get an S&K scope mount to mount a nice scope and put a sporter stock on it. Looks like parts are available all over to get this thing in service again. The photos aren't the best but they show what I have.

thats a restorable M1917 , shame to make a hunting rifle of it - unless you were thinking no cut/D&T/restoration that would still serve your needs , otherwise consider selling and buying a deer rifle in 30-06 ?

I wasn't planning on cutting it. I want to keep it the same as pictured but just add a sporter stock and maybe a Lyman's front sight if they have one. Does anyone know if they make a sight to fit the original military sight mounts? I know I've seen somewhere that you can buy a scope mount that won't change the original military rear sights ears but I'm not sure about the front sights.

I don't know if a lyman (globe?) front sight was made for the '17, but front sight bases are fairly common. You could buy a couple and modify one to take a globe sight. Some people have rifles that have the danish front sight insert that has a roll pin much like some of the modern sights, and they like them.

It's too bad, that's a really early number too. You could get the parts to rebuild it and still get a sporter in '06 for hunting. Or just sell the barrelled action to one of these guys and get a ready to hunt rifle...
