I am not an expert on NM butt plates but I can cite an example. In 1974 I had moved to California and joined a gun club. I met an ex target shooter, and when he learned of my interest in M1903’s indicated that he had some old “Springfield” parts that he would like to sell. I went over to his house and he showed me a NM M1903 that he had converted to a sporter. It was polished and blued and the bolt had been altered to clear a low scope. The barrel had been polished but had not been shortened because his scope mount had an auxiliary peep sight that would allow one to remove the scope and use iron sights. The S/N was 1403163. The bolt was highly polished so I could not find a serial number but was able to make out the barrel date of ?-35 and it was star gauged.
He sold me the complete stock with furniture and the Lyman 48C, and threw in both O’Hare sight covers. The stock number matched the action number and came with a fine not coarse checkered butt plate that I believe was original.
During the late 1960's I bought a couple of these fine checkered butt plates for about $2.50 each.
