A starter punch is also a help at getting the pins to move initially. The starter punch is tapered so that all the force is directed at the pin instead of getting flex in a straight punch. You can pick up a nail set and grind the tip to fit. Once the pin moves initially, you go to the regular punch.
If you are going to fool with Carbines, the removal and installation tool is worth the money.

Thanx for the replies. My Carbine is a Plainfield & it's got a roll pin in the sight not a solid pin. I've never had a problem with this type pin on my Harley. But its my first time on a carbine & I'm just a tad uneasy.

I would treat a roll pin different. The way I do it on machinery is to use the exact size punch as the pin, or you run the risk of the punch sliding into the pin(not good) or marring the sight. A starter would still be a good idea, as well as the penetrating oil. Just my thoughts, good luck.....Frank

You can also purchase a roll pin punch specifically for driving out roll pins. Works perfectly every time (as long as it's the proper size) . Most professional tool sources sell them individually or in sets.
Just FYI
Take care !

I've had people tell me a good piece of hard wood will work, but I went ahead and ordered a puller. After drifting the pin out, how tough are these rascals coming off of the barrel? I've worked on Hot-Rods all of my life, but I dont want to screw up my sight. A little support here is what I need, I'm sure these sights are pretty tuff. I dont have a Installer, I was going to drive it back on with a piece of hardwood and a brass drift real carefully. Now you guys tell me if I need one of the installation tools and I'll wait until I can order one, but if a piece of hardwood and a Brass drift will do the trick I'll give it a shot. I know there are a lot of you old timers on here that have probably done this a lot of times.
I am in the same boat with the WRA I just bought. I need to remove the front sight to send the type 2 band to PBI's friend for swivel installation. PBI has generously offered me his removal tool to use. I am still hesitate to try this. Anyone in the Greenville SC area done this before?
