The few M1903 rifles among all the M1 rifles could have been used to fire rifle grenades

It's a good deal more likely that recruit platoons were issued both rifles and withdrew the M1903 as new M1s became available. The caption states that the picture was taken at Parris Island in Nov. 1941. It's unlikely that a recruit platoon would have dedicated grenade launching rifles and grenadiers.
