    I agree with Melanie. Frome what little I've seen: if the rifles were refurbished but left in original Mk1 or Mk1* configurations then the original markings are usually still intact (though the Indians often overtsamped them...eg the 'No4 Mk1' on the side wall of the body of the rifle); if converted to Mk1/2 they were usually linished at the same time, with loss of the original (whoops! Sorry....I used the 'o' word again!), markings, & new ones applied to the R side of the butt socket SMLE style, eg. 'RFI 1962' (someone will remind me if it also said 'No4 Mk1/2' as well). The serials were stamped, again SMLE style, on the R side of the receiver ring, eg. A0051T, A0075T, etc.
    Sorry if I'm a little sketchy, but being post-WW2 reworks I never hung on to one for long.....
