My first M1 Garand and some questions about it

Well, I took her out to the range this week. She shot like a dream with no problems at all. It was not as accurate as I would have liked but I now know why. Unfortunately when I was cleaning it after the range trip I discovered that the bore was not as nice as I thought it was. There is some pitting in the middle section of the bore. The muzzle end is good and the chamber end is good but the middle is not.

Its a shame, but I suppose I needed another project to throw on the pile. I am really enjoying learning about this rifle and how it works so I guess I am looking forward to doing the barrel replacement.

Barrel replacement is nothing frightening. You can get bits and parts here and there are a couplke of gunsmiths here too. That being said, I did my own. It's not hard, I built the barrel blocks and action wrench and away I went. They aren't fully chambered so you might want to look into the gunsmith. I used a Kreiger barrel in 7.62 and there's no movement in the gas cylinder, I actually had to fit it to a swage fit. You could also hunt a period correct barrel but I'll bet the Kreiger will be more cost effective for you.

I figure I will try it myself. I am always one to jump in and do something new. I will research the hell out of it, take it slow, and learn from those who are willing to share knowledge. Thats how I did my first 1911 build and Im glad I did it myself because I learned a whole lot in the process. Plus, if it blows my arm off I wont have anyone to blame but myself.
