russian mosen m 44 rifle.
I recently accquired mosen m 44 rifle that my sixteen year old grandson wants to shoot. I checked the firing pin height with a gage the 9.5 height is ok but the 7.5 dose not touch the pin i tried ajusting it but then the 9.5 height is to long.do I need a new pin? The other question is this when the bolt is full forward in the firing position it seems that the bolt is a little loose. the lever moves up and down slightly and when doing so the ejector mechanisum shifts a little. is it supposed to be loose and would it be safe to shoot. I donot want my grandson to be hurt because of my neglegence. thank you for any help.

I have five Mosin-Nagants. The bolt is a little loose on all five, the worst being an ex-sniper that is also the only one I've fired. The bolt tightened up real quick once fired. There was no evidence of any creep, the casings look fine and the primers look good. I can't answer your question about the firing pin but I can't imagine you needing a new one, especially if this is one of the recent import re-arsenalled rifles.
Your grandson will probably not find it pleasant to shoot. I had no issues with mine, a 91-30, but my daughter and her boyfriend both declined to fire a second shot from it and it is a lot heavier than an M-44. My daughter is rather slight of build but her boyfriend is not, he's used to shooting an AR however and this was a bit more than they ever kick.
I'd advise you to not let him shoot it until you are fully comfortable with it yourself.

Firing pin protrusion on the Mosin should be between 0.095" maximum and 0.075" minimum .

If you ever get into reloading the 54r there are several cast bullet loads that reduce felt recoil to nothing and accuracy is excellent and much improved over surplus ammo.

mosin m44
thanks for the reply but it dose not answer my question of the firing pin. at the minimum dose the pin have to be right on. i would hate to eject a shell that did not fire properly. dose the clearance on both the minimum and maximum have to be right on or is there room for error? thanks for any info.

There is no set number that I know of to set your firing pin protrusion on,the tool just provide a basic gauge The .075" notch should NOT pass over the tip, but the .095" notch should allow the tip to slide under it. Lower than 0.075 will probably give you light primer strikes and FTF issues longer than 0.095 will more than likely cause pierced primer issues.
If it falls anywhere between the two measurement you should be fine, your primers will tell you if it's set to shallow or two deep. I will try and measure mine tomorrow with the back gage on my calipers and see what I set it to several years ago but I think I set it right in the middle at 0.085ish" and I haven't had any issues with any type of surplus ammo or reloads and different primer I've used.

I think the FP measuring tool is one of the simplest measuring tools ever invented. Just use the notch in the middle, run your FP length to that and you should be fine.

Just use your Mosin tool, and don't sweat it. +1 to what sovblocgunfan said.
