Rare Vietnam Winchester M1200 trench gun

I guess I never posted pictures of my Winchester M1200 trench gun clone next to my M16A1 clone. The stock and handguard are USGI, the receiver is painted with Aluma-Hyde II flat black, the barrel and barrel shroud/bayonet lug and other parts are parkerized.

I am building one of these using a pawnshop M1200. I've shortened the barrel shroud to 20 inches, but I have run into a problem.

For those who have done it, how did you get the barrel shroud to fit? My shroud does not have enough clearance between the set screws and the barrel. I could make some relief cuts in the bottom of the barrel for the screws to clear, but if there is a better way I'm open to suggestions. I am pretty sure I can make the cuts without damaging the barrel's integrity.

Does the real thing have relief cuts, or is the barrel tapered to clear?

Yes, the factory guns have the three grooves cut into the bottom of the barrel.

I'll post some pics when it's done. I've got the barrel cut (got lucky and found a cylinder bore 26") down to 20" and I'm working on fittng the shroud. Going to finish the reciever in black and parkerize everything else. Also need to refinish the wood, any advice for correct stain there?

It depends on the wood but if it's walnut you could use tung oil, watco danish oil or BLO just like before. The first and the last are the military standards.
...Is it walnut?
