... It's "real name" was:
United States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1
Later:
Rifle, Caliber .30, M1
Seriously, where to you people come up with this nonsense?

It's called "tugging the chain of the pompous." And the name of the rifle is: U. S. Rifle Cal. .30 M1. Sez so on the receiver heels of my 3 iterations thereof.

See? I can be pompous, too!
