AR-15 forearms
I have an AR-15 A-2 rifle. I want to put accessory rails on my forearms. it looks like they make bolt on rails for rifle length forearms are they any good ? solid non moving. Quad rails are very expensive, for me any way. what are free floating forearms?are piston operated bolts better than gas other than cleaner. would like to install a bi pod and maybe a flashlight but want it solid. thanks for any and all advice don w.

Surefire Railed handguards just bolt on, no Dremel or take down needed, and work just fine. And there are other, similar solutions. They cost only a little more - and you don't have to permanently mess up your rifle to do it. And there are bottom rails that bolt on - if you aren't using them too hard (bipod, etc). CC

The Surefire rails aren't free-float.

You're welcome. My other AR is shorter, so it must be more evil.
It's a North Eastern Arms rifle with NEA free-float fore-end.

Daniel Defense makes a 2 piece that is extremely solid and does not require gunsmithing.
For your purposes it would work well.
Considering I worked for another manufacturer (considerably more expensive)...there are only 2 or 3 i would recommend other than the 'home' brand (not appropriate for your use), DD and Troy being them.

Free Floating is indeed generally a desirable trait, but it does not always matter. Neither the M14
or the Model 70 Winchester barrels free float, and yet they can be tackdrivers. My Colt Govt. Carbine is extremely accurate with the Surefire handguards installed - point of impact did not change, even with the older (heavy!) Surefire pistolgrip light added. And I didn't kill the value of the rifle by cutting on it.
Brownell's does sell that nifty FSB gunsmith's AR15 bench block to make the removal and reinstallation of the Front Sight Base pins easy, and Daniel Defense does indeed make good gear. Lots of really good choices available, OP. Different strokes, etc. CC
