Woolfat Jelly for Enfields

I came across an interesting item/accessory for sale for Enfield Rifles today and wondering if anyone knows more about it or what it's use would be on Enfield rifles? Apparently this woolfat was used on Enfield rifles in WW 1. This woolfat comes from sheep according to google.

ever seen a shearing shed floor, nothing rusts and the wood is a nice sheen. a great lubricant, preservative and rust inhibitor. Will do much the same thing as canubra wax or beeswax and BLO.

I use lanolin usp (avaliable at any pharmacy) on my rifles. Works wonders on dry leather slings. Wipe the underside of the barrel and action on blued rifles used to hunt in the rain.

There's a commercial lanolin based product - Lanox I think - marketed as a rust inhibitor/waterproofer/ leather treatment... It's advertised as a "do-all" sort of product - possibly a down under version of Ballistol if one were inclined that way....

Anyone have thoughts or experience on the use of lanolin in the preservation of milsurps? It seems to have the benifits of cosmoline without the obvious downside with which we are all familuar.

Be careful with lanolin. It is VERY hygroscopic; i.e. "water loving".

Leave a container of the stuff open and it will simply absorb moisture out of the air; somewhat akin to brake fluid. Hydrated lanolin would not be a good thing to put on gun parts, especially areas concealed by woodwork.

I suspect that the commercial preparations have added solvents and possibly waxes mixed in to try to reduce this effect. Using the stuff in pressure-pack cans would probably be preferable to doling it out of an ordinary container.

Good points about is effect on wood, though I would prefer a good carnauba wax brew.
