Can Someone Venture A Guess On This Rifle Sling Type ?

A cousin passed away some time back and in his collection of rifle bits-and-pieces was a leather sling that I'd like to know about.

The sling is brown leather and it has the classic double adjusting hooks that I'm used to seeing on U.S. military rifles but this sling is much narrower .... probably about half the width of the U.S. slings.

The most curious feature of the sling is the method of attaching to the rifle. On each end of the sling is a quite small (perhaps only a half-inch on-a-side), neatly made, metal 'box' that has, on one side, a spring-loaded piece that can be pushed-out and rotated. With that piece rotated you can then slide the exposed metal 'pin' though a post (with a hole in it) on the rifle and then the spring-loaded piece on the sling is rotated back and allowed to close-the-square, thus securing that end of the sling to the rifle.

I suspect that this sling was a standard with some series of rifles but have no idea who's ... it could be European or something from the former Soviet bloc.

That sounds like the swivel attachment that was used on those types of Mauser - Brazil Mauser, Gew98 and some versions of the K98k*, for instance - that have a hole just in front of the trigger-guard bow for this purpose. But the double-hook adjustment is non-standard for military Mauser slings. And I would expect a target rifle or sniper sling to be just as wide as the US 1907 type sling you mentioned. So at this point I can only guess that it is a home-brew sling. Pictures would be required to be able to make any further deductions!

Thanks much for the reply.

I took a closer look at the sling and saw that the leather (a nice chocolate brown) was marked 'RS402'.

When I did a Google-search for that I found this .... it's for an item being sold on a European Web site - now out-of-date but the picture (when I looked) was still there and I believe that it's for the same type of sling that I've asked about :

Also .... when I gave the sling a really close look I found that one of the parts showed 'NYC' so I suspect strongly that the sling is a copy made on the east coast of the U.S.

If your sling is exactly like that then someone left the sling swivels on the sling. If so theyre run of the mill and on almost any newer slling/rifle combo. Google uncle mikes sling swivels and you should get lots of pictures,

Now that I see the photo you linked to your mail, it is clear that this is not an original military sling + swivel, but a modern commercial product, as clarified by mdrim13.

These slings are a great value at around $25 a piece. Have one on my Marlin Model 60 and it dresses my plinker up quite nicely.
