Beautiful type I with odd front sight problem..
Picked up a beautiful Type I awhile back which is incredible mint. Odd thing is the front site is cocked on the barral about thirty degrees to the right..It fires fine but ofcourse inpossible to hit paper..
Besides maybe turning the barral could a gunsmith fix this...

It may just need pinning. A good smith could make the job about invisible. An alternate solution if the base is really loose would be to pull it off and epoxy it in place, if it was just a shink fit. But that seems unlikely.
Does anyone know how these front sights were locked in place originally?

Old Joe, First make sure the barrel has not been uscrewed. It probabably has not, based on the fact tthat you can shoot it. That means the extractor will fit properly into it's slot and the bolt can close. Check for some alignment marks on the barrel to receiver mating. If that all checks out examine the sight with a magnifying glass. Most of the Japanese rifle have a pin through the sight that is sometimes very difficult to see. I have seen the pin and sight damaged by someone twisting on the sight. Possibly they tried to unscrew the barrel usiing the sight as something to torque on. (Yikes! Extreme Bubba) Drive out pin and clean up burrs and damage. realign sight and reassemble. Epoxy as previously mentioned.

IIRC, the type 1 front sight is pretty much identical to the average garden variety carcano sight. These are secured by a set screw(hidden by the blade) that goes down through the sight base from the top into a detent in the barrel. This arrangement is'nt very good at keeping the sight from rotating if the attempt is made to drift the blade with a punch and hammer with the base unsupported.

Your awesome, just looked at the rifle again and the barral/reciever allignment mark was no more than a sixteenth of an inch off in the wrong direction. No pin either..just when I was about to say What the Truck you posted...
Now to fix it..
Thanks again..
