To me it looks like a rigger modified, second pattern Griswold bag. The dark green canvas add on should be doubled with felt. The M1 .30.06 Rifle could be fitted in this bag without being disassembled, so it was ready for action much faster after the dropping. AFAIK it was mainly used late in WW2, by the 17th during Operation Varisty.

It is a Griswold bag . It holds the M1 with the stock removed . The stock fits in one half , the bbl/reciever with the trigger assmly snapped in in the other. The added piece , if not long enough for the assembled M1 , is then for the solid stocked M1 carbine or the Thompson SMG.

Thanks for the photos. I'd have to agree with Chris - from the length, I'd guess it was rigger modified for a full size M1 carbine.
Being a 'one off' item with no standards of previously sold items to compare it to, the value is whatever someone is willing to pay. In my experience, rigger modified items usually sell for a little less than an original item so I'd guess it would be worth a little less than a Griswold bag. Some people have interest in rigger modified items though, so the right person might even pay more than an original Griswold bag - that's why I think it's worth just whatever someone is willing to pay.
